The inflationary pressure has been abnormally high since the pandemic years. It is a race to keep price steady for the customers, raising the salary of the team and provide a healthier work-life balance. So, we asked our friends for help.
Our friends at Smitten Coffee Roasters (Singapore) has provided us with a platform to counter inflation with their innovative approach to canned coffee.
Convenience
Need coffee on the way to work? Done.
Go camping without brewing equipment? Done.
It is a coffee that can exhibit 3 flavour profiles depending on serving the temperatures.
Try drinking it cold from the fridge.
Warm it up by placing the opened can in a hot water bath.
Or just have it at room temperature.
This is the magic of quality coffee captured in a can.
Pure Quality
No preservatives. No flavouring. No sugar added.
The coffee is made with 100% coffee beans, ground to specific particle size distribution and brewed with specially tuned water over filtered paper, just like how it is done in the cafe.
Laboratory tested with no bacteria after 6 months. Nitrogen purged to reduce oxygen. The tastes and flavours are guaranteed to be stable for 6 months with a shelf life of 1 year.
Coffee Total Dissolved Solids is estimated to be around 1.5% with 98.5% water.
The Development
The idea took years to realised. There were many technical hurdles and various issues with scale and investment. We needed a system that fit our business model and an end product that is within a reasonable price point.
Our hard working people at Smitten Coffee Roasters eventually overcame the technical challenges and gave us a working platform.
We will be offering 3 Levels of Quality for canned coffees:
Cafe Grade • Max-Premium
Cafe Grade • Ultra-Premium (The current release)
Cafe Grade • Premium (The current release)
There may be slight variability between each brewing batch because we are still using traditional pour over method with paper filter.
However, the subtle variability soon becomes a positive quality because these subliminal shifts tend to bring excitement with each sip while evading boredom.
For long shelf life, nitrogen purging process was used. This may naturally infuse minute amount into the coffee beverage.
The first sip may have trace amount of nitrogen gas in the coffee and skew the profile slightly. As the coffee breathe more with each subsequent sips, the nitrogen gas will escape from the coffee and bring forth the full bouquet of the coffee.
Aroma Driven
Cafe Grade • Ultra-Premium coffees have a unique character. They are aroma centric.
The chosen coffee beans, the roasting process and the brewing sequence were aligned to exude more delicate nose quality such as floral notes.
Due to this nature, these coffees are more prone to variability when ones taste-flavour perception shifts, especially among those who have subdued sense of smell, either due to health, stress, medication, insomnia or natural aging.
Aroma driven coffees are unstable by nature. That’s the beauty. It’s a reflection of life.
